Youth Project Uganda Raises $3200

$3200 for Ugandan Kids

In 2005, Montara helped another awesome team of students raise over $5300 to drill a well in Malawi, Africa, during the Water For Life project. With Project Uganda, a new group of students used this amazing opportunity to change the lives of some very special kids in Uganda. By the end of Summer 2007, they had raised $3200 in just a matter of weeks!

Why Uganda?

During the service project, students learned that in the country of Uganda there are between 1.4 and 1.7 million people living in displacement camps, unable to return home because of conflict. Combining first-hand experiences from leaders with watching the Invisible Children documentary film, students became aware of the injustice of the situation.

The Project Goals

Through Invisible Children, this brave team of Jr. High and High School students raised money to scholarship Ugandan kids into schools, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford any education.

The Events & Results

Students and project leaders worked together to come up with a number of events to raise awareness and funds for Invisible Children:

Displace Me: Montara
Students and leaders slept out all night in a parking lot, with only cardboard boxes for shelter. Around 16 students participated! See the photo gallery.
City-Wide Garage Sale
Students flyered the whole city asking for donations for the sale, and all the proceeds went to Invisible Children. We raised over $1300 on Saturday, July 8, 2007! See the photo gallery.
Change Jars & Cash Donations
Montara residents donated hundreds of dollars in loose change, plus more by check and cash, totalling $1900! The team had a lot of fun counting and rolling all those coins.

By the end of the summer The Greenhouse team of student-leaders was able to send $3200 to Invisible Children for needy kids in Uganda!

“Egg Hunt Food Drive” collects 1.5 tons of food!

Who were the big winners of the 2008 city-wide hunt? Needy coastsiders! Scores of families collected well over 200 bags of donated food for Coastside Hope, an organization that serves the needy on the coast. Violeta, who works for Coastside Hope, told us:

“Our pantry was looking a little bare. Usually we have half the warehouse full of food, but because of the weather and layoffs, we have been giving out more food than usual! This will really help!”

By our estimates, Montara donated 1.5 tons of food. That’s right, tons! Thank you, Montara, for your generosity and compassion. Be sure to see the photos of the 2008 food drive!
